It’s Like a Fancy TV Dinner

26 Mar

Does anyone remember these?

I hate to admit it, but when I was little, these were like, my favorite things in the entire world. Especially the ones that had mashed potatoes. To this day, fake mashed potatoes hold a special place in my heart. It’s not something I often admit to people though, and I indulge in them even less.

My brother and I didn’t get to eat these that often though. When I was 7 my family moved, and we had to stay in a hotel for 6 weeks because my dad had to start his new job, but we hadn’t found a house yet. We had a tiny kitchen in our hotel room, so my mom liked to prepare easy meals. This time of my life was when I was introduced to these lovely TV dinners.

Now a days however, I shudder slightly when I see them in the frozen food section of the grocery store. Right after I stare at them fondly, remember how much I used to love them, of course.

Since I’ve gone G-Free, (Thanks for all of your support on my last post, BTW. It’s greatly appreciated!!) I’ve been eating a lot more frozen foods and meals than usual. Every time I see a “Gluten-Free” “Dairy-Free” or “Vegan” label, I get really excited. They’re like fancy TV dinners.

Here are some of my recent purchases. Some of them I’ve already tried, some of them not yet.

I only meant to buy one of these, but for some reason I ended up with 2. I haven’t tried them yet, but I’m excited to, because of course, the first think I craved when I gave up gluten was pizza. Go figure.

These aren’t frozen foods, but I’m sure they’re just as processed. Some Trader Joe’s Falafel chips, and quinoa and black bean chips. And some amazing Rice chips I found at Whole Foods.

I’ve been kind of at a loss abut what to eat for breakfast, so these waffles are serious lifesavers.

I’ve tried several of Amy’s gluten free and dairy free burritos, and I’m loving them. I haven’t tried the rice and veggie bowl, but I’m excited to. The macaroni and cheese was a little disappointing. The cheesiness was there, but the noodles tasted awkwardly like soggy rice cakes.

I haven’t tried either of these yet, but once again, I’m excited to. I was so stoked when I saw a gluten free and dairy free veggie burger!

I’ve been kind of in a weird food mood lately, but hopefully once I get used to living sans gluten I’ll be able to go back to my normal way of eating, with lots of whole foods, grains, and veggies. A lot of my meals before were actually gluten free, but for some reason, now that I’m telling myself not to eat it, I want it.

Did you ever eat Kid Cuisines when you were little? What’s your favorite “fancy TV dinner”? Have you tried any of these products? If you have, let me know how they are!!

OK my age shows a bit. I did not get Kid Cuisine dinners. Mine actually came in aluminum trays. My favorite back then was chicken pot pies. Today I like this Kashi Harvest Bake dish with polenta when I can find it.

I didn’t know those Kid Cuisines were still made!! Waaaay back I worked for a commercial photographer who did the print photography for that product. We had empty boxes all over the studio (I never ate one, however). Looks like some awesome products here!

I loved Kid Cuisine! That brings back so many memories. I loved eating dessert before my actual dinner, it made me feel like a badass haha. Haven’t tried any of those products but I hope you find some good ones to make the change easier for you!

Eh, it’s the awkward restriction mindset. I know it happens to me a lot if I have food nearby and I tell myself I have to save it. It begins to consume my thoughts so I have to eat it RIGHT THEN. Kinda crazy. Glad you’ve found some G-free options though!
&& Those kids meals…aw man I loved those. Chicken nuggets, mac n cheese, and that brownie were my jaaaam.

Oh gosh, I think we were maybe lucky enough to have Kid Cuisine once a year, maybe, always with the babysitter. It was such a treat then. I know what you mean about buying everything with the right label on it. That, along with vegan baking, is why I was never able to lose weight as a vegan.

I love the Amy’s Burrito! I am super sad when I finish one though. Why do they have to be so small? :(

Haha I’ve never had Kid Cusines but I did used to eat those Budget Gourmet things. Blehh. Now that I’ve had “good” Frozen dinner s(like Amy and Kashi) I can’t go back!

I so remember eating those kid’s cuisines when I was longer. Awh, those were the days. ;) I’ve been wanting to try Amy’s Non-Dairy Pizzas for SO long. I bet they’re delicious!
