It’s Like a Fancy TV Dinner

26 Mar

Does anyone remember these?

I hate to admit it, but when I was little, these were like, my favorite things in the entire world. Especially the ones that had mashed potatoes. To this day, fake mashed potatoes hold a special place in my heart. It’s not something I often admit to people though, and I indulge in them even less.

My brother and I didn’t get to eat these that often though. When I was 7 my family moved, and we had to stay in a hotel for 6 weeks because my dad had to start his new job, but we hadn’t found a house yet. We had a tiny kitchen in our hotel room, so my mom liked to prepare easy meals. This time of my life was when I was introduced to these lovely TV dinners.

Now a days however, I shudder slightly when I see them in the frozen food section of the grocery store. Right after I stare at them fondly, remember how much I used to love them, of course.

Since I’ve gone G-Free, (Thanks for all of your support on my last post, BTW. It’s greatly appreciated!!) I’ve been eating a lot more frozen foods and meals than usual. Every time I see a “Gluten-Free” “Dairy-Free” or “Vegan” label, I get really excited. They’re like fancy TV dinners.

Here are some of my recent purchases. Some of them I’ve already tried, some of them not yet.

I only meant to buy one of these, but for some reason I ended up with 2. I haven’t tried them yet, but I’m excited to, because of course, the first think I craved when I gave up gluten was pizza. Go figure.

These aren’t frozen foods, but I’m sure they’re just as processed. Some Trader Joe’s Falafel chips, and quinoa and black bean chips. And some amazing Rice chips I found at Whole Foods.

I’ve been kind of at a loss abut what to eat for breakfast, so these waffles are serious lifesavers.

I’ve tried several of Amy’s gluten free and dairy free burritos, and I’m loving them. I haven’t tried the rice and veggie bowl, but I’m excited to. The macaroni and cheese was a little disappointing. The cheesiness was there, but the noodles tasted awkwardly like soggy rice cakes.

I haven’t tried either of these yet, but once again, I’m excited to. I was so stoked when I saw a gluten free and dairy free veggie burger!

I’ve been kind of in a weird food mood lately, but hopefully once I get used to living sans gluten I’ll be able to go back to my normal way of eating, with lots of whole foods, grains, and veggies. A lot of my meals before were actually gluten free, but for some reason, now that I’m telling myself not to eat it, I want it.

Did you ever eat Kid Cuisines when you were little? What’s your favorite “fancy TV dinner”? Have you tried any of these products? If you have, let me know how they are!!

Tablespoon Sized Confessions

26 May

Hey Ya’ll! Soo…. yeah… It’s been over TWO months since I last blogged. I don’t know what it is. Or why I haven’t blogged.

I guess I’m just trying to figure out a few things. Since my last post a few things have happened.

I did not get accepted into Teach For America.  Sad I know. But I still think it’s a really great organization doing great things across the country. I just wasn’t right for them.

That’s not going to stop me though. I realized through all my work for their interview that I really want to be a teacher. So I’m going back to school. That’s right- I just graduated from college, and now I want to go back. Hopefully, I will be getting my Master’s degree in Family and Consumer Science Education in 2-3 years.

I also quit my job and moved with my parents. They just needed a change, so we packed up our cars and headed out to Michigan to live with my Aunt, Uncle, and Grandma until my mom found a job/house. And she did! We will be moving to Small Town Indiana, in 2-3 weeks. It’s so much fun being around my cousins and their small children! It’s never dull. Or quiet, for that matter.

In August, I will be heading down south for an internship on an Alpaca farm (I know what your thinking- Whaaatt?? ) But I’ll be doing a lot of baking for the farmers market and hanging out with Alpacas- which If you knew me personally, is a dream come true.

And Lastly- my stomach has been cranky lately. Like for the past few months lately. Sometimes it hurts so bad when I’m sleeping it’ll wake me up. So I’ve decided to strip a lot of common stomach-upsetters from my diet for three weeks and slowly add them back in one at a time.

These things include:

Alcohol, Caffeine, eggs, dairy, gluten, yeast, peanuts, fruit juices, mushrooms, corn, tomatoes, citrusy- fruits, chocolate (sooooo hard!) soy, sugar, and processed foods. This whole process will take almost 3 months. ugghh. It’s difficult finding things to eat sometimes- but I’m being creative.

This is a wordy post, I know. : ( But, I’ll be back tomorrow (I promise!) with some pictures, and then after that hopefully a glance into the foods I can eat!

Random Question of the Day: Although I’m not ready to make the leap to veganism just yet, I do take being a vegetarian pretty seriously. Recently, I’ve been going through all my cosmetics and making sure that they aren’t tested on animals. Do any of ya’ll have a recommendation for sunscreen? Badger brand always seems to come up under really good sunscreens and it’s not tested on animals, but a 2.6 oz tube is $16!!!! That’s cray-cray. So, if you know of any, I’d love to hear! (p.s.- I’m a super sunburn prone ginger. SPF 10 won’t cut it for me. Sadface.)
